TOPIC
Norovirus Infection - Norovirus infection can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea that starts suddenly. Noroviruses are highly contagious. They commonly spread through food or water that is contaminated during preparation or through contaminated surfaces. Noroviruses can also spread through close contact with a person who has norovirus infection. Diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting typically begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Norovirus infection symptoms usually last 1 to 3 days. Most people recover completely without treatment. However, for some people — especially young children, older adults and people with other medical conditions — vomiting and diarrhea can be severely dehydrating and require medical attention. (Reference: Mayo Clinic)

Warning: Norovirus is spread through person-to-person contact with an infected person or by touching infected surfaces such as a door, toilet and faucet handles. Norovirus can survive on surfaces for two weeks. Cleaning and decontaminating surfaces is critical to remove and destroy the virus. (Reference: University of Minnesota) Note: When dining out, wash your hands before eating and be careful not to touch surfaces. Always place your silverware on a clean napkin or plate. Never place your eating utensils directly on the table.

Hydration, Electrolyte and Nutritional Support - If you have norovirus illness, you should drink plenty of liquids to replace fluid lost from vomiting and diarrhea. This will help prevent dehydration. (Reference Article CDC) The BRAT Diet Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. (Reference Cleveland Clinic)

Over The Counter (OTC) Medications - Imodium A-D Generic name: (Loperamide) Drug class: Antidiarrheals. (Drugs.com) Pepto-Bismol Drug class: Antidiarrheals and Anti-nausea (Drugs.com)

Norovirus Spreading Across Florida - Cases of a nasty stomach bug known as norovirus have spiked in recent weeks across Florida and several other states, according to recent data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Across Florida)

TOPIC
Abdominal Obesity (Belly Fat or Visceral Fat): Cause and Effect - Excess belly fat can be dangerous because it surrounds internal organs and puts you at greater risk for developing several kinds of health problems. These problems include:
  1. Increased blood lipid levels and cholesterol (Harvard Medical)
  2. Fatty liver disease (20% of Americans have this and 10% don't know they have it until it's a major problem - Harvard Medical)
  3. High blood pressure (National Institute of Health)
  4. Higher risk of cancer (MD Anderson Cancer Center)
  5. Leaky Gut Syndrome (Simple sugars increase the permeability of toxins into the abdomen - Harvard Medical)
  6. Type Two (II) Diabetes (National Institute of Health)
Additionally, a of Type II diabetes is insulin resistance, in other words, most prediabetic's pancreas produces insulin but the muscle cells are resistant to insulin. Therefore, glucose is not transferred into muscle cells and other body cells. If a person who is overweight (most Americans are) loses just 10% of their fat cells, the road to eliminating insulin resistance has begun. (Washington School of Medicine)
Easy Calculator that determines ideal body weight (MD Calculator)

The Gut-Brain Axis: The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication network that links the enteric and central nervous systems. This network is not only anatomical, but it extends to include endocrine, humoral, metabolic, and immune routes of communication as well. The autonomic nervous system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and nerves within the gastrointestinal tract, all link the gut and the brain, allowing the brain to influence intestinal activities, including activity of functional immune effector cells; and the gut to influence mood, cognition, and mental health. (National Institute of Health)

What is Serotinin: Serotonin is a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body. Serotonin plays a key role in such body functions as mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting and sexual desire. Serotonin levels that are too low or too high can cause physical and psychological health problems. Ninety-five percent of Serotonin is manufactured in the gut. (Cleveland Clinic)
What problems are associated with low serotonin levels?
  1. Depression and other mood problems.
  2. Anxiety.
  3. Sleep problems.
  4. Digestive problems.
  5. Suicidal behavior.
  6. Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  7. Post-traumatic stress disorder.
  8. Panic disorders.
  9. Schizophrenia.
  10. Phobias.

TOPIC
Conolidine: A Novel Plant Extract for Chronic Pain - Pain, the most common symptom reported among patients in the primary care setting, is complex to manage. Opioids are among the most potent analgesics agents for managing pain. Since the mid-1990s, the number of opioid prescriptions for the management of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) has increased by more than 400%, and this increased availability has significantly contributed to opioid diversion, overdose, tolerance, dependence, and addiction. Conolidine is an indole alkaloid derived from the bark of the tropical flowering shrub Tabernaemontana divaricate. Conolidine is a potent non-opioid analgesic and has been found to lack the typical complications associated with opiate analgesics like nausea, vomiting, respiratory depression, constipation, tolerance, and physical dependence. TOPIC
Chronic Nerve Pain (Neuropathic pain) (Another New Discovery) - "One of the most difficult conditions to treat, neuropathic pain is often sedated with opioids—now, on the horizon, may be a safer, non-addictive alternative. The study, conducted at the University of Texas and the University of Miami and published in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in December 2023 found that the molecular compound FEM-1689 effectively reduced neuropathic pain in mice with long-term results. Researchers hope to develop this compound into a drug to treat chronic neuropathic pain in humans without the dangerous side effects of opioids." TOPIC
Hearing Aids - Earwax (cerumen) is produced by cells lining the ear canal and works to protect the ear canal by keeping it clean and healthy. Wax is normally self-clearing but, if there is disruption to the normal movement of wax, it can build up in the ear canal. This build-up of wax can occur for many reasons, including using hearing aids, if cotton buds or other objects are inserted into the ear canal or if there has been previous surgery. You should always have your healthcare provider examine your ear canals and remove excess ear wax. The old adage is, "never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear canal" (Reference: National Institute of Health)

TOPIC
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) & NASH - NAFLD is more common in people who have certain diseases and conditions, including obesity, and conditions that may be related to obesity, such as type 2 diabetes. Studies suggest that one-third to two-thirds of people with type 2 diabetes have NAFLD.1 Research also suggests that NAFLD is present in up to 75% of people who are overweight and in more than 90% of people who have severe obesity. Poor diets especially with excessive simple carbohydrate (sugars and starch) intake. (Reference: National Institute of Health)
