The Impact of Obesity on Bone and Joint Health

Every pound of body weight places four to six pounds of pressure on each knee joint. Individuals with obesity are 20 times more likely to need a knee replacement than those who are not overweight. Reference: American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS)

Good indicators are our Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) and our Body Mass Index (BMI)as seen in the graphic below.

Waist-to-height Ratio and BMI

To calculate WHtR, measure the waist circumference and height in inches. Then, divide the waist circumference by height, and multiply by 100. Individuals who have either overweight or obesity are at higher risk of developing conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Example: My waist size was 44 inches and my height is 70 inches. 44 divided by 70 equals 0.628. Then times 100 is 62.85 or rounded is 63. If I examine the chart I am obese. This means I am twenty times more likely to require a knee replacement, not to mention both knee, hip, and back pain.

I have lost weight and reduced my waist size to a 34 inch waist from a 44 inch waist. I recheck my Waist-to-Height Ratio. Waist size 34 divided by 70 equals 0.485. 0.485 times 100 equals 48.571 or 49 rounded. My Waist-to-Height Ratio is now normal and my knee and hip pain is gone.

Calculating my BMI requires more math; however, The National Institute of Health has an easy Calculator here.

Calculating my BMI I entered my of 5' 10'' and my weight now is 194 pounds down from 238 pounds. My BMI is 27.8. After examining the BMI chart above I remain obese. I started using the calculator to find out what my ideal weight should be. To reach my normal BMI range of 23, I must weigh 160 pounds. I have 34 pounds yet to lose. Although my knee and hip pain has improved, I am still at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and type II diabetes.

NOTE: Patients who suffer from obesity that have a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) have a five times more likelyhood of prosthetic failure after their surgery. (Reference)

In my humble opinion, pray for health, but also pray for strength and discipline and the Lord will meet you more than halfway.

"I sought the LORD, and he heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: And their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, And delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him." Psalms 34:4-8 KJV
